Are you up for a challenge? Then you've come to the right place! We've complied a list of PC video games with the best boss battles, and I think you're going to love it!
From Dark Souls, to Mortal Kombat, to Elden Ring, to Batman Arkham City, we're talking some of the toughest, and most spectacular fights in gaming history. Whether you're a glutton for punishment, or you simply want to put your skills (and wits) to the test, these are some of the most difficult, and therefore potentially most satisfying, encounters we've come across.
They are also some of the most frustrating! Battles that will make you want to punch the air in celebration if you emerge the victor, but may make you shed a few tears along the way! Take a look and see whether you agree with our list, we had a lot of fun putting it together.
Two for the price of one, Ornstein And Smough represent the final obstacle in your mission to uncover the fate of the fading of the world. Tough in their own right, together they are deadly.
And herein lies the problem. You see, if you get the better of one, you enrage the other. Thereby escalating the fight. For example, the nimble Dragonslaver, Ornstein, gets faster, while the brutish Executioner, Smough gains increasingly powerful attacks. Sounds tough? It is!
Ultimately, survival comes down to tactically maneuvering and timing your strikes. However, if it's really too tough, you can always summon another player to join in the fun. Not quite the same satisfaction levels as winning a 2v1, but of course that would require staying alive, which is easier said than done!
Don't let Slave Knight Gael's slow start lull you into a false sense of security. He may start slightly sluggishly, but at its height, the intensity of this legendary boss battle is through the roof.
Indeed, considered the Final Boss of arguably the most difficult video franchise ever, Slave Knight Gael is about as tough as they get. Hard to read, and therefore challenging to defend against, Gael's combos are long and unforgiving. To make things worse, he gains further attacks as the fight progresses.
Add the lightning and projectile hazards that rain across the arena, and you get a sense of the overwhelming nature of this encounter.
Indeed, considering this is an optional part of the Ringed City DLC, you may well regret your decision to take on the Slave Knight Gael. If you want to beat the best, however, then you have to see it through!
OK, I know we've already covered a Dark Souls 3 boss encounter, but we couldn't omit Midir from our list.
I mean, have you ever hated a boss more than you hate the Darkeater Midir from Dark Souls 3? I doubt it! A colossal dragon with unblockable and nigh-undodgeable wave attacks, Darkeater Midir's massive health bar guarantees a minimum 10-minute encounter. 10 mins that feel more like 10 hours!
Indeed, Darkeater Midir is not only one of the most challenging bosses of the series, he's one of the hardest opponents in gaming history. And one of the most frustrating! On the flip side, beat Darkeater Midir, and you'll feel like you can do anything!
Boss of Dark Souls 3’s Painted World expansion, Sister Friede's grueling three-phase fight very quickly knocked other challenging contenders off the toughest boss list.
Making herself invisible, phase one involves grabbing you out of nowhere and inflicting massive damage. If you somehow manage to get an attack in and deplete her health bar at all, she then summons the hulk-like Father Ariandel to join the party.
This second phase sets the room on fire, adding Ariandel crawling around and smashing you with a huge bowlful of flaming blood to Friede's devastating attacks.
Then we have the Blackflame phase, which basically makes Friede's abilities even more deadly and catastrophic.
Good luck!
I know Radagon and the Elden Beast are two separate bosses, but the fact that the game makes you fight them back-to-back without a break means that we are considering the encounter as one big boss fight. And it's a tough one at that!
I mean, if the god Radagon was on his own, he wouldn't make it onto this list. Yes, he's strong, but he's no Usain Bolt, and you'll soon get the hang of avoiding the earth quakes that result from his blows. The difficulty rises when The Elden Beast leaps onto the scene. An alien beast with devastating attacks that are more-or-less impossible to avoid, this final fight will certainly test your resolve.
Yes, it's Elden Ring again, but when a game's as critically acclaimed as this one, it's hard to limit yourself to only one list entry!
An optional boss, Malenia is one you won't want to miss out on. Probably the most popular opponent, it's not difficult to see how this powerful sorceress has become something of a mascot for the game. It is, however, difficult to see how it's possible to escape Malenia's unpredictable and relentless lighting-speed attacks intact!
The arena is big, which may at first feel reassuring. However, the speed at which Malenia chases you down soon diminishes any confidence you may have felt at the beginning of the encounter.
Malenia is tough, really tough. Let's just say, you'll appreciate the scale of the task at hand when you notice that each blow Malenia lands replenishes her health. And that includes the blows you block! Now we're talking Dark Souls levels of sadism.
Things get progressively worse when the second phase is activated, involving a dangerous health-sapping status effect. Then there's her most brutal attack, the infamous Waterfowl Dance - a move that's nearly impossible to dodge. This is not an encounter for the fainthearted!
One of the most harrowing battles in the horror genre, the Pesanta boss fight from the Separate Ways DLC for Resident Evil 4 is intense.
Remember how sinister and grotesque Pesanta was the first time around? Well, he's just as formidable. Only now he walks on hind legs, making him that much more agile. Bad news for Ada.
The environment is foreboding, the attacks are relentless, just try to keep your distance until the time is right to strike. Oh, and stock up on healing items if you want to stand a chance. This won't be over quickly.
If you're looking for a Devil May Cry boss encounter to end all Devil May Cry boss encounters, you need to check out Mission 19 and 20 in the Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. It is here that Vergil takes on his very own twin brother, the Legendary Devil Hunter Dante.
With almost exactly the same move set as his playable self, including his signature long and stylish combos, the Dante boss incarnation is difficult. Very difficult. Especially when you add the Devil Trigger and Sin Devil power boosts.
The satisfaction of beating your brother makes it all worth while. The only problem is, you first have to manage to beat him.
Arguably the most epic final encounter in the history of the franchise, the survival of the universe rests on this fight. It's you versus the powerful sorcerer and shape-shifter, Shang Tsung. Summoning the souls of his defeated foes and channeling their abilities, Tsung can call on Quan Chi to assist him in his fight, making this extra tricky.
Unfortunately, You have no such luxury. It's just you, so you had better master your character's skill set. Random button-mashing won't cut the mustard with this one!
Like all good video games, when it comes to boss battles, Tales of the Arise has left the best till last. In this case, your final encounter with the villainous Vholran represents the culmination of increasingly tense showdowns that have taken place throughout the game.
In a similar fashion to previous fights, the finale takes place over multiple phases, each more challenging than the last. Indeed, you'll need the help of every party member to get you through this.
With standout dialogue, Tales of the Arise exceeded expectations with this one. Just be ready to be challenged!
It doesn't get much more iconic than the ultimate M. Bison showdown in the classic Street Fighter II.
Nefarious leader of the Shadaloo crime syndicate, M. Bison is big, strong, and powerful. Put it this way, you don't want to be on the receiving end of one of his 'Psycho Crusher' or head-stomping attacks. There's a reason Bison is widely considered the most formidable adversary in the game. It's the same reason you'd better master your character's skill set; to stand a chance of beating the brute!
Hands down the toughest boss encounter in the game, Mr Freeze has an arsenal of tricks up his sleeve. which mean you can't hide. At least not for long. For example, if you are in front of him, Freeze will scan your body heat to track your position. If you're out of range, he'll send out drones to locate you. He'll then use the same ice gun Penguin used earlier in the game, alongside frost grenades, to take you out.
Head-on attacks will merely provoke a devastating counter, and you'll need to mix things up. Indeed, to beat Freeze you must use five distinct moves, each of which will only work once.
The number of times you will need to take him down will depend on your difficulty level, with New Game + requiring 9 successful hits, but after each attack you will need to use a Beat Down. This in turn will provoke a specific countermeasure, as well as the activation of his suit's shield, which will inflict damage on you if you stay too close.
Are you starting to get a picture of the task at hand?
The biggest boss of the series, The Warrior of Borderlands 2 sure knows how to pack a punch. He's huge. He's also an alien beast, which helps with his move set. In other words, his attacks are deadly.
Having said that, The Warrior isn't without his weak spots. Namely his chest. And although the fight is challenging, it never feels unfair. Makes a nice change!
Above all, what makes this fight stand out is its visuals. It's stunning. Just try not to let the graphics distract you. This isn't a spectator sport, it's a fight till the end!
Where else will you have the chance to go head-to-head with Satan himself than in Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow?
A surprise final boss, perhaps, but a satisfying, if somewhat petrifying, one! The initial shock of the disclosure of the evil puller-of-strings is accompanied with some expected dialogue, and then the fight begins.
Put it this way, this is not an encounter you'll forget in a hurry. The music is intense, breathtakingly so. And the formidable attacks and relentless aggression will put your skill, reflexes, and strategic prowess to the test.
This is the Prince of Darkness, after all, it was never going to be anything less than punishing.
A fight that not only puts your technical abilities to the test, but that also challenges your emotional resilience, this is by far the most challenging encounter in the story.
With unique moves, and very healthy health bars, Daigo, Saejima, and Majima would be tough enough opponents 1v1. Put them all together, and you'll really have your work cut out.
Our top tip? Target one at a time. Not easy when they are all gunning for you, but once you get one down, your chances of success increase. I mean, 2v1 is much better than 3v1!
Oh, and make sure you have fire, ice, and electric attacks among your party members, you'll need them.
A homage to TEKKEN history, the final battle between Jin and Kazuya is as over-the-top and bombastic as they come.
Set amidst a swirling vortex of chaos, with slow-mo shots, freeze frames, and music that changes according to Jin's moves, this is an appropriately emotional battle. A fight to the death between father and son. A final encounter that will end the blood feud that's existed since the beginning of time, and a battle against the Devil Gene at the root of so much destruction.
With overwhelming power, alongside the resources available to him as head of the ominous G Corporation, Kazuya is a tough opponent. It will feel good to beat him though!
