It wasn't until relatively recently that strategy games - be it turn-based or real-time - started picking up steam again, pun wholly unintended. This renewed interest in games that put players at a slight remove from action allowed smaller-scale developers and publishers to circle back to the strategy niche, and Hooded Horse is a prime example of this being the case.
Hooded Horse is a game publisher that specialized in all manner of strategy titles. From medieval city-builders to turn-based interstellar ship combat, this is the company to look at if you want more tactics in your life. And, thanks to 2Game's awesome Singles' Day 2024 PC game sale, you get to get them at massively discounted prices. Here are a few highlights!
It's not often that we get city-building games, let alone ones that are set in dark fantasy environments. Against the Storm does precisely just that, however, allowing players to take control over humans, beavers, lizards, foxes, and harpies as they make a stand against the encroaching darkness. With Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam, Against the Storm is a must-have at 50% off, so don't dawdle.
Another phenomenally inventive Hooded Horse title, Empires of the Undergrowth puts players in control of a veritable ant hive as it struggles to survive and thrive against the natural flora and fauna living nearby. This remarkable twist on the classic RTS formula shows just how far the concept could be taken, if only someone gave it a shot. Get your Steam copy at 50% off!
Not much needs to be said about Manor Lords, we don't think! This awesome Early Access medieval city-building strategy offers one of the most in-depth and engaging takes on the niche yet. Sure, there's still work yet to be done on it, but at a third of its base asking price sliced off, this is an absolute win no matter how you look at it.
The surprisingly competitive medieval fantasy alternative to Rimworld, of all games, Norland punches well above its weight thanks to its underlying simulation systems. This is a far deeper game than it might seem like at a glance, and the really notable bit is that it also looks pretty darn incredible compared to other examples of the niche. Not pointing any fingers, of course.
An unlikely combo between a full-blooded turn-based strategy game and a - believe it or not - deckbuilder, Breachway delivers something we straight-up haven't seen before in practice. Another Early Access game, Breachway is currently a tad rough around the edges but shows clear glints of brilliance that's getting polished out with every new update. At 25% off, it's a bit of a must-have.
Cataclismo hybridizes real-time strategy games with survival city-building and LEGO-level architecture, and it all comes together incredibly well. The game is also more story-heavy than one might expect, though even at this stage of its Early Access period, it also has dedicated survival maps and skirmish addons. Nice!
XCOM and X-COM proper have been on hiatus for way, way too long by now. At the same time, the developer and current rights holder Firaxis isn't doing anything with the IP. This is a pain, to be sure, but games such as Xenonauts 2 lessen the blow by a fair margin. This awesome love letter to the classic X-COM of yore nails all the makings of a true alien defence strategy, and we cannot recommend it enough at 35% off!
