Resident Evil 3 Remake is finally here! Following the incredible success and critical acclaim that its direct predecessor got, it was no wonder Capcom would be keen to rework one of their most popular releases of all time. That time has now come, and we're happy to say that we're most pleased with what Capcom has done!

Like before, RE3R is a re-imagination of the original game. Streamlined, tense, and snappier than ever before, this game evolves the core gameplay loop of Resident Evil 2 in a way that makes sense however you look at it. Word of warning, this isn't a 1:1 follow-up at all. What you'll find here is a game that isn't afraid of tackling new challenges and making it clear that it's quite different than what came before.

Is Resident Evil 3 Remake as good as the previous game was?

resident evil 3 remake

In case you need a refresher, Resident Evil 2 Remake was incredibly well-reviewed! Sitting at a suitably high 91% approval on Metacritic, we're talking about one of the best RE games ever released. Capcom fully intends to continue doing things this way, but we're happy to say that they're not above taking risks.

Instead of just reskinning Claire and adding a few new levels to the mix, Resident Evil 3 Remake cuts out a different, more dynamic niche for itself. Leon and Claire were both capable combatants during their first adventure, but Jill is something else. A slightly different character this time around (one that makes more sense), Jill Valentine has ample combat experience, and she's also already encountered the horrors unleashed on Racoon City. Not only will she handle more powerful high-caliber weaponry in RE3R, but she can also perform dodges and outmaneuver enemies more easily. Time your dodge perfectly, and you get a short window of time to perform a badass bullet-time takedown. Regardless, Jill's final stint in Racoon City is absolutely terrifying and tense, even before the Nemesis steps in.

The other playable character - Carlos - offers a more action-oriented take. Some of his encounters remind us heavily of certain fan-favorite scenes from Resident Evil 4, and he serves as a solid change of pace around the middle of the game.

As you may suspect, this all boils down to a different game than RE2R was. It's slightly shorter and more streamlined, but better in some ways. What we like the most, though, is that it stands as a perfect sidegrade to the modern rendition of Resident Evil 2! These two games are a complete package, make no mistake.

How does RE3R compare to the original game?

As we've mentioned before, RE3R isn't a direct remake. This is a distilled, condensed, and improved version of Nemesis from the very start. Capcom is reworking their Resident Evil mythos into something that makes way more sense than it did before, it's obvious now. Characters are more interesting and better developed, their motivations and objectives make more sense, too. The new Jill, for example, is now a far better example of a hard-boiled badass than she was before. Better still, she feels more human than she used to be.

To better facilitate the new narrative, Capcom has done away with a few areas from the original game. Instead, you'll find the ones that stuck around to be far more detailed and interesting. Similarly, some encounters are gone, some have changed, and some are delightfully the same! The Nemesis does take on a slightly different role than it had before. Regardless, our clashes with it have been nothing short of incredible. All in all, a great revision of RE history, and a phenomenal sign of things to come!
