Will Scarlet Nexus be multiplayer? Here's everything we know about the PC version of this Bandai Nemco action role-playing game!

This anime-looking action RPG is produced by Keita Izuka, whose previous work includes Code Vein. Having said that, while Code Vein may have leaned a bit heavily on its Dark Souls influence, Scarlet Nexus is more similar to the likes of Devil May CryScarlet Nexus is set in a so-called Brainpunk universe. Here, humankind is beset by 'Others' that descend from the skies to wreak havoc. As you'd expect, it's up to us to put a stop to that.

Now that you've got a sense of the pitch, it's time to talk business! Down below, you'll find everything we know about Scarlet Nexus, and - as always - we'll keep updating this article to reflect the latest reveals. Have fun!

Is Scarlet Nexus Multiplayer?

Will Scarlet Nexus have multiplayer co-op mode? The answer is somewhat surprisingly, no. Instead of co-op multiplayer, Scarlet Nexus is a dedicated single-player experience. That's right, there's no co-op multiplayer option to speak of. Which makes sense when you think of it, considering it's an action RPG.

That is to say, with the Bandai Namco focus on role-playing features and a singular, non-customizable player character, it does feel par for the course to forego multiplayer co-op mode. Hey, who needs cooperative play when you can immerse yourself in a story-driven single-player game full of psychokinesis battles?!

Importance of Story and Setting

If there's one thing Scarlet Nexus has got going for it from the start, it's the premise. This is a Bandai Namco game, after all.

The aforementioned 'Others' are mostly a total unknown in the alternative contemporary world of Scarlet Nexus, but their goal is plain: to eat human brains. These strange amalgamations of life and un-life are designed to be disturbing and incomprehensible, and from what we've seen so far, Bandai Namco's been doing stellar work with Others across the board.

Back to the topic of the game premise - Scarlet Nexus imagines an alternative 2020 where technology leans heavily towards the psychological. In fact, it leans so heavily that people's connections to each other and to the Internet of things are depicted in the physical world. This has, somehow, drawn in the Others, who clearly have a penchant for munching on augmented brains for this or that reason.

While it's not exactly ground-breaking, the whole thing does intrigue us. We can't wait to see what surprises this action RPG might offer in the end!

Various Scarlet Nexus Gameplay Details

Scarlet Nexus is not a Soulslike game. Not in any traditional sense, at least. No, the game's not looking to ape other Bandai Namco properties in that sense. Instead, Nier and Devil May Cry make for better comparisons. Now, though the core gameplay loop will be a fair bit faster than that of, say, Code Vein, Scarlet Nexus is still going to retain a number of RPG features we'd expect from regular Soulslikes.

In fact, the game takes this feature a bit further still, with a granular network of three disparate skill trees for players to invest in. Combined with the game's robust-looking companion system, chances are that we'll be getting a pretty darn deep game overall.

On the topic of other characters, you can expect casual banter between fights. Even dialogue choices, as it were. But we won't bug you too much. If you're interested in learning more about the game, check out the trailer featured below.

Does Scarlet Nexus have Character Creation?

Another thing that sets Scarlet Nexus apart is that it doesn't have character creation. Instead, the protagonist Yuito was created as a universal stand-in for players to invest in. While Yuito will obviously change and grow as the story progresses, Bandai Namco felt that they needed a "normal" protagonist for players to connect with in light of all of Scarlet Nexus' other weirdness.

The second playable character - Kasane - is going to have an entirely different campaign, and players are going to have the chance to experience the same narrative twists and turns from both of their respective perspectives. Whether that means Kasane and Yuito will have different gameplay mechanics and skill trees, we do not yet know.

Will Scarlet Nexus have RPG Features?

As we said before, Scarlet Nexus is an action RPG with a number of familiar features such as skill trees and selectable dialogue options. We've also seen RPG-style quest tabs in the game's menu screens. Of course, we don't know whether the game's world will offer a free-roam option where said quests would be located. We wouldn't be too weirded out if that were the case, that's for sure.

There's also a neat Bestiary screen, where you'll be able to review all the Others you had encountered so far. We always appreciate having the chance to pore over creature design details, so good on Bandai Namco for focusing on that small, albeit appreciable detail. Good stuff all around.

Wrap-Up

So, we know that Scarlet Nexus is a single-player action RPG game with no co-op multiplayer. But is that such a bad thing? In fact, it's very fitting for an immersive RPG experience a la Bandai Namco to forgo cooperative play. The only thing about such an engrossing single-player game without co-op multiplayer mode is that you may have to tell your mates you'll be busy for the next few weeks!

As ever, we also have a bunch of other cool content available if you fancy something different. Just a few days back, for example, we wrote about Hood: Outlaws & Legends - an exciting medieval PvPvE heister. We also created a top 15 list of our favorite games with female protagonists, and we can't recommend that one enough. There's also the March Madness sale to consider! It's a big one, so make use of the deals while they're here.
