Some deals have discounts in place, so they're well worth checking out. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to the good stuff.
Though we'll be keeping all the pre-release information we collected on Squadrons down below, we thought it might be a good idea to take a look at its PC review scores, too, now that it's finally out! We won't dilly-dally all that much, as the general consensus is that Star Wars Squadrons is a pretty cool game, all in all.
"Star Wars: Squadrons’ single-player campaign missions are a feast for Star Wars fans’ eyes and ears," said IGN. "[it] doesn’t end up doing anything too memorable with its charming characters or interesting rival squadron setup, but this campaign still tells an entertaining Star Wars story I enjoyed no matter which cockpit I was in."
PCGamesN had similarly high praise to share about Squadrons: "What it is in fact is a great looking, technically demanding starfighter sim that provides a dynamic new spin on space dogfighting without any of the usual monetary cruft that accompanies live service games today."
What we heard from Polygon more-or-less mirrors the rest of the reviews we had the chance to read: "Star Wars: Squadrons is the total package," they said. "You're going to have a wonderful time."
On Metacritic, the game has been awarded a decently high rating of 78. Steam reviews, however, paint a slightly less-positive picture with 'Mixed' scores citing VR and multiplayer problems. Growing pains? We do think so. It's all but certain that the developers will patch these problems out of the picture soon enough. Having said that, if you're hunting for a great story-driven single-player dogfighting game, this is an absolute slam dunk after all.
Don't get us wrong: we're huge fans of what EA and DICE have done with the new(-ish) Battlefront 2 since the game launched, but that's still a far cry from playing a proper Star Wars space dogfighting game! Thankfully, EA recognized the need to fill this niche, and now the upcoming Squadrons title sure seems to be the Star Wars pilot game we've needed for so long.
Those hoping for something along the lines of Elite: Dangerous may be disappointed, but Squadrons gameplay isn't about high-fidelity space-fighter simulation. Quite the opposite: it's the Call of Duty to Elite's ARMA 3, if we had to draw a comparison! That's not bad, though, because the game will have a heavily-pronounced multiplayer mode, which will live or die by its player base. Not that we're worried: this is Star Wars, after all.
What we're getting with Squadrons gameplay is a streamlined interstellar dogfighting shooter, and we couldn't be happier with this formula. The game looks intense in all the right ways, and it's very true to its source material, too.
Though there are team deathmatch modes in Squadrons, Fleet Battles will be the name of the game. These multi-staged objective-oriented clashes between the New Republic and the Empire will feature the two factions duking it out over capital ships! Whichever faction destroys the other's main vessel wins, but it's a lengthy and engaged process. It seems similar to the kind of stuff you'd expect out of a Battlefield game, now that we think of it.
If you were hoping for a staggering number of different vessels, Squadrons may disappoint you with its selection of 8 unique ships. Having said that, everything we've seen so far suggests that these are insanely detailed and entirely unique, which speaks to the game's focus on quality over quantity!
Each faction will get 4 unique starships, ranging from the legendary TIE fighter all the way to Y-Wing bombing craft. Each starship will correspond to a unique battlefield role, whether it's support or direct combat, and with unique HUD elements and features, it seems there's a bit of a learning curve to each. Player skill will definitely come into play, rather than number-crunching.
You sure can! So far, we've seen cockpit customization and baseline skins for the different ships, though we expect more details on this particular feature as we come closer to the game's actual release window.
Oh, it's coming! Though, you will need a hefty rig to run Squadrons in VR mode properly. Find more details in the System Requirements section.
The game is slated to launch pretty darn soon, on October 2nd! This means there's not a long while to go before we're dogfighting our way across the galaxy, Force or no Force! With the game's comprehensive single-player campaign and a dedication to establishing a healthy multiplayer component, we're not sure who the game might appeal more to! Honestly, we're hoping for a Titanfall 2 sort of situation, where both components are absolutely phenomenal, having received both fan adoration and critical acclaim.
Since the game is coming out on the 3rd of October (which is just a few days away at the time of writing this section), you may have expected a few reviews to have popped up already. This is, however, not the case, which may lead you to suspect that there's a Star Wars Squadrons Review Embargo in place.
We have no information to share on that end, so we don't know whether this is true or not. However, our bet would be that the review copies are either only just incoming, or that they will be incoming in the near future. Reviewers don't often get really early access to review copies, but this doesn't necessarily mean that there's a review embargo in place. Chances are that review outlets such as RPS simply won't publish their critique of the game until it's out. We'll see how this whole shindig pans out.
Looking to nab the game while the pre-order bonus content is still available? Great idea, if you're into customization. Here's what you get:
As you can see, this suggests that there's way more to customization than mere cockpit and skin modifying. We bet EA has got a few tricks up their collective sleeve in this regard because their multiplayer offerings are often top-tier far as unlockables go. Best of all? No microtransactions!
If you've got less than a stellar Internet connection, you're probably interested in whether there's a Star Wars Squadrons preload option available. Far as we can tell, there should be one, but users have been reporting availability issues and date changes for quite some time now.
The original plan was - far as we could tell - for Squadrons preload to be out by the 21st. That changed, though, and the preload was then pushed back to the 25th. In other words, if you had placed a pre-order, you now should have been able to download game files already. We say 'should' because this wasn't the case, and there was yet another pushback instead.
According to information from EA's Origin service, the new Squadrons preload date is slated for September 30th, 22:00 MDT. Since the game will be coming out just a few short days after that, we're hoping that EA won't push preload even further ahead. You never know, though!
Naturally, Star Wars Squadrons is designed to run on as wide a variety of hardware as possible. However, one does have to keep in mind that it will also support VR gameplay, boosting its theoretical PC system requirements sky-high. Thankfully, EA has been kind enough to offer both non-VR and VR requirements, so here they are!
GTX 1070 is no joke! For most of us mortals, though, who can't afford a proper VR set-up, the recommended specs are fairly tame. GTX 1060 is a great baseline for modern game releases, though it is worth keeping in mind that we're talking about a 4-year-old GPU at this point.
We expect that the upcoming release of a new generation of consoles will boost the recommended PC requirements significantly. Thankfully, those of you who are interested in Squadrons and Squadrons only, don't need to concern themselves with that!
What might impress us the most about Squadrons is its impressive crossplay capability. Namely, the game will support full, unrestrained crossplay across all the platforms it will launch on. This means full crossplay between PC, PS4, Xbox One, and VR! How about that!
Note, however, that this parity across platforms and modes is achieved by locking players into the first-person mode, and simplifying things to an extent. That's where our comparison to Call of Duty comes in, though it's hardly a bad thing! Something to keep in mind, if you're looking into getting Squadrons, is all.
First things first, here's the official reveal video we got mid-June!
