The Division 2 in 2021 is both a curiosity and one of the best long-lasting projects Ubisoft has worked on. No joke - the game is currently in the best state it's ever been, owing mainly to its planned end-of-life updates that launched late in 2020.

However, following what many fans thought would be the final content releases for Division 2, the developers seem to have rethought their stance on the matter. Later this year, Division 2 will receive more content, and possibly even a major new expansion pack. Talk about surprises, eh?

That leaves us in what might look like a precarious position. Will upcoming Division 2 content warrant playing the game today? In the world of games-as-services dedication does not come easy, and we can hardly fault you for being careful with your time. That said, we firmly believe that there's much to love in Division 2.

The game was decent enough at launch, sure. Since then, however, it's received a number of phenomenal updates and content releases that you might not be aware of. We're here to summarize them, and to offer you a look at what awaits in Ubisoft's popular looter-shooter in 2021.

Is The Division 2 in 2021 Worth It?

While it might seem like looter-shooters are a dime a dozen nowadays, we'd argue that this isn't really the case at all. Of the ongoing releases, Destiny 2 is going strong as ever, but it's really not much of a looter-shooter in the traditional sense. Borderlands 3 is a pretty great game, but it has been winding down over time. Outriders is coming out tomorrow, but it's not an AAA production by any measure of comparison. Anthem's gone the way of the Dodo. That leaves us with Division 2, for all intents and purposes, and little else.

Despite the Tom Clancy legacy, the wizards over at Massive Entertainment have somehow managed to meld true looter-shooter mechanics with those of a tactical action game. The end product is a strange combo of Diablo-like loot farming and modern-day cover-based combat. The weirdest thing of all, though, is that it works.

Now, to be perfectly clear - not everyone will enjoy what Division 2 has to offer. From personal experience, however, yours truly started out with very high skepticism and ended up being convinced in Division 2's remarkable atmosphere and gameplay loop. Arguably, the first game's Christmas-time New York setting was even better in this regard, but don't miss out on DC in the Summer. Seriously: it's a hoot.

What makes Division 2 worth my time?

First things first, it's hard to overstate just how much stuff there is to do in Division 2. The campaign itself is decent enough, though dull in the same way most modern Tom Clancy games end up being. Having said that, let's not kid ourselves: no one really plays a looter-shooter for its campaign. The endgame is where it's at, and virtually all of Division 2 is viable once you reach its pinnacle of content.

From the core campaign missions that get "invaded" by Black Tusk mercenaries all the way to its fabulous Expedition missions, the Summit survival mode, and even Dark Zones - Division 2 is simply fun. And it showers you in loot, most of it being pretty dang great.

In a surprising turn of events, one of our favorite features after reaching endgame (with WONY, its must-have DLC) was to free-roam around both DC and New York. The game world is loaded with goodies, and it's a phenomenally atmospheric world to be a part of.

Is Division 2 good for solo players?

Surprisingly enough - it is! Solo players can access the vast majority of Division 2 - short of its Raids - and it's even possible to finish most of it without the help of other players. Most newcomers are likely to have way more fun in a group, but we were really taken aback by the quality of the game's solo open-world environs and adventures.

In fact, the game features possibly the best implementation of targeted loot farming we've seen yet, and it's entirely possible to get endgame-ready items from doing open-world tasks and missions on your own. If you're more interested in secrets and discovery - there's loads of that, too, to the point where we might even go so far as to say that Division 2's maps are by far its best feature. All in all, a solo player's dream come true.

What major updates did the game get?

We've previously mentioned major content updates that Division 2 received, and which improved it since launch. The release of Warlord of New York - WONY - was one of those, to be sure. Numerous post-launch Expeditions and the release of the Summit helped a bunch as well, but it's the quality-of-life updates that really did it for us.

From awesome new Exotics and Legendaries, over the long-awaited Recalibration Station, and all the way to a fully-fledged Transmog system, The Division 2 currently shines no matter where you might look.

Then comes the Seasonal content, providing us with long-term objectives and all-new items to chase. Of course, you will need WONY to make the most out of the game's systems since it adds a far better endgame system than the original got stuck with.

How do Seasons work?

Seasons are free ongoing content that is exclusive to Warlords of New York. They're basically months-long manhunts with unique gadgets and loot available at the end. There's a battle pass sort of unlocking track, too, and if you play the game with any regularity, it's really easy to get everything there is to get.

Since the next major content drop is coming in late 2021, Ubisoft and Massive are now reprising Seasons. With an all-new schedule, of course. This will allow even total newbies to get some of the game's best gadgets and weaponry at a decent pace.

The question that you might have, of course, is whether WONY is worth the extra asking price.

Is Warlords of New York Worth the Price?

major part of what makes The Division 2 in 2021 as good as it is would be Warlords of New York. Not only did the release of this DLC get virtually everyone interested in the game again, but it also signaled a renewed focus from the devs. Set in the almost entirely refurbished Lower Manhattan region from the first game, WONY adds a formidable amount of new content.

As you may imagine at this point, an all-new map to explore with goodies to uncover was our favorite addition. Indeed: Lower Manhattan is more vertical than virtually all of DC, allowing devs to really pack the goodies in. Hidden SHD caches, loot drops, and unique Shaders await. Then there are all the new Capture Points, collectibles, and - yes - Exotics to fiddle around with.

The key feature of WONY, however, is its backend. The new version of Division 2's endgame with WONY is far superior to any that came before. If only because there's no annoying gear score to constantly look out for. Find a comprehensive overview of the new features below.

Our verdict, though, is clear: Warlords of New York is a must-have for every serious Division 2 player. It adds way too much for anyone to ignore. Whether you're looking for sheer content or for system improvements, this is the thing to buy.

What does WONY add to the game?

Of course, if you opt for the more expensive Ultimate Edition of WONY, you're getting even more stuff:

Quite the package, isn't it?

Of course, that's not to say that the base game doesn't have much to offer. It does! It's just that WONY adds too much stuff that's too good for us not to consider.

The Division 2 in 2021: Wrap-Up

With the promise of more goodies on the way, The Division 2 is a hard game to ignore. Even in its current state, it feels like a truly complete package, and everything that comes with Seasons is just a handy extra that's hard to argue against. While the game's initially slow start is sure to have pushed some players away, there's little to complain about far as The Division 2 in 2021 is concerned.

Explore overrun Zoos and hunt down the President of the US. Fight your way through a 100-floor skyscraper and complete the chaotic 8-man Raid if you're up for it. Hunt down all 12 Rogue Agents and unlock their masks and Shaders for use. Even if you only buy the game to explore its impeccably modeled environments, you'll get your money's worth, we're sure of it.

So yeah - we're pretty big fans of the game overall. And we're very excited to see what Ubisoft and Massive Entertainment cook up next.
