It's Easter time, and you know what that means: we're hunting for Easter eggs in video games! This topic is rather nostalgic for many of us, so we decided to offer a bit of a combo with this article: we're offering a big overview of Easter eggs from games both old and new! Just below, you'll find a big list of video game Easter eggs 2020, offering an opportunity for you to hunt them down!

Ranging from Doom Eternal all the way to Quake 2, you'll see all sorts of Easter eggs here. Fun, creepy, and outright insane: don't miss out on this collection of secrets and discoveries from all eras of gaming. Have fun, and have a happy Easter!

Doom Eternal and Daisy the Rabbit

There's a whole lot of Doom Eternal Easter eggs we could pick and choose from, but we hold Daisy to the highest regard. There's heaps of awesome stuff in Doom lore, but many might not know that it all started with Daisy. Being one of the first victims of the demonic invasion, and Doomguy's own pet bunny, she may well have been the initial trigger for the man's murderous rage.

Now, Daisy may be well and truly dead (RIP), but she does make an appearance throughout Doom Eternal all the same! Hawk-eyed players will have a chance to find her hopping in each of the game's main levels, completely unfazed by the demonic presence surrounding her. On top of that, Doomguy seems to have commissioned a truly dazzling portrait of her aboard the Fortress of Doom. A perfect match for this article, truly.

Skyrim's Ultimate Homage to Star Wars

video game easter eggs 2020

We had to choose long and hard between Skyrim's staggering selection of homages and Easter eggs, and in the end, we felt that this one was most appropriate. Older gamers may recall that it's possible to find Indiana Jones' final resting place in Morrowind, and this Star Wars easter egg is pretty similar.

Luke Skywalker's close call with the cave Wampa on Hoth is pretty darn legendary. It just so happens that someone had a similar encounter with a frost troll on Elder Scrolls' Nirn. More specifically, you can find this familiar scene in Bleakcoast Cave, and it caught us by surprise way back when we first found it! Skyrim's full of good stuff like that, really.

New Vegas is way weirder than we all thought it was

Fallout was never a franchise that would shy away from true weirdness of dead-end apocalypse. Being true to its roots, New Vegas has its fair share of ridiculousness that some of us may have missed entirely. Our favorite example of the bunch has got to be Stripe the Deathclaw, a deceptively cutesy micro-monster.

Located in Old World Blues' Higgs Village, Stripe directly references the Gremlins picture. In fact, this little bugger is named after the evil gremlin leader himself, and if you approach his yard, he will eviscerate you where you stand! Stripe the Deathclaw is about as powerful as a Legendary Deathclaw, so do come prepared! Alternatively, if you'd prefer not to kill the little slugger, just stay off his (perceived) property, and you'll be golden.

The Arx Fatalis Board Game on TALOS-1

video game easter eggs 2020

It's hardly a secret that we're huge fans of Arkane and their output. Prey, in particular, stands out as a wonderful example of world-building in an immersive sim. However, the crew over at Arkane is careful not to forget where they came from! Arx Fatalis, their first release, and one of the best games ever made, got a neat little reference in Prey, in fact.

Scouring the Crew Quarters of TALOS-1 you may have come across a book called 'Fatal Fortress Game Master's Tome, 6th Ed.' and thought nothing of it. However, if you read through the excerpt, you may well have noticed a few neat little hints that this tabletop RPG is set in the universe of Arx Fatalis. Namely, the game is set in a world deprived of sunlight, players fight against horrors that have slept for centuries, and there are no character classes to speak of! Then you find character sheets like Captain Stabfellow above. Its font and skill insignia was lifted directly from Arx, and it all becomes clear. Good one, Arkane, good one!

Rip and Tear across Pandora and further

What would an Easter eggs list be without good old Borderlands 3? Now, there are almost too many references to pop-culture and other games in B3 to keep track of, but we opted for this specific one. After all, we just can't do without a little rip-and-tear in our lives. The Hellwalker is an immensely powerful Jakobs shottie that fires pellets in a distinctive pentagram pattern. Its description, too, is a very clear reference to the Super Shotgun, as well as its name and design. So, you know, everything about it screams Doom. It's one of our favorite guns in the game!

Huh, guess Doomslayer is a state of mind, and not necessarily a person. We can relate.

The Weeping Witch of Brigmore

video game easter eggs 2020

Arkane's second offering on this list is way creepier than the first, and it works as a direct reference to one of the most terrifying concepts from Doctor Who. In the Brigmore Witches expansion for the original Dishonored, you may come across a carved marble statue of the antagonist witch, Delilah. Just nearby is a collectible Bone Charm that all players will immediately jump after. However, if you keep track of the statue while doing so, you'll notice that the statue will turn towards you when you're not looking!

Not a very fun thing to experience in a mini-campaign that focuses specifically on blood magic and the horrific ways in which it is used. Sure did give us a proper spook, though!

Kill B.J. Blazkowicz in Wolfstone 3D

It's a running gag by now that Bethesda's classic FPS franchises let you play their original iterations while you're playing their latest iterations. In Doom Eternal, for example, you can play both DOOM and DOOM II while wasting time aboard the Fortress of Doom. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus went a step beyond that, offering a fully revamped version of its ancient predecessor. Fun! The mini-game can be found right after B.J.'s birthday party, below the big Club Kreisau banner in the game room.

Titled 'Wolfstone 3D', it's a what-if scenario where the game is played from a young Aryan officer's perspective. His job? Oh, nothing grand, just to take down B.J. himself! It's not only a fun Easter egg, though. Since The New Colossus presents a '60s America where Nazism runs rampant, Wolfstone is pretty much the equivalent to what we did get in real-life. How's that for a combo?

What really happened to Director Northmoor of the Bureau of Control

video game easter eggs 2020

Okay, we know, we get it - Control is absolutely brimming with easter eggs wherever you look. From direct references to Alan Wake that are literally years old, all the way to out-of-world spoofs on events we deal with in the real world, Control has it all. However, it being a Weird game, we decided to focus on its creepier qualities. One question that some players may have stuck with is that of Director Northmoor. You know, the guy who controlled the Bureau before Trench took his place? It's heavily implied that the guy's paranormal powers got the better of him. He simply had to be dealt with.

Remember that weird power container you come across early on through the campaign? The NSC? The acronym stands for 'Northmoor Sarcophagus Container', and if you check some of the displays nearby, you'll see plainly that there's a living being trapped inside. Put 2 and 2 together and...

As Trench put it: "At the end of the day, a Director's duty is to keep the lights on." How right he was.

Playing Football in Rainbow Six Siege

Siege, like any good multiplayer shooter, has its fair share of secrets strewn across the maps. Ranging from people trapped in shipping containers all the way to custom weather vanes, our favorite is more specific than this. Namely, if you're so inclined, you can go play the Favela map and play football! With goal sounds and all!

The football minigame is located on the western end of the map, and players can play it using drones and weapons both. It's a fun distraction from getting absolutely pummeled by pro-tier players, we think.

Cities: Skylines - A prequel to DOOM

video game easter eggs 2020

Cities: Skylines' neat wannabe-Twitter feature has given us much joy in-between difficult city planning decisions. Our favorite of its hundreds of messages has got to be the cheeky UAC reference, though! For those who haven't been playing Doom since forever, UAC stands for the game's 'Union Aerospace Corporation'. The company that is to blame for the demonic invasion of our universe, in other words.

In Cities: Skylines, they've only just announced their plans for the colonization of Mars, so it's not too late for us to run the hell away. With all of this in mind, we're wondering why devs didn't let us outfit our sprawling city sandboxes with rail-guns and BFGs. If Doom Eternal is anything to go by, we'll need them!

Fallout 2's mysterious crashed whale

If New Vegas is weird, Fallout 2 is bat-shit insane. The game is positively brimming with ridiculously specific references and Easter eggs, and it was really difficult to pick just one of them out for this article. In the end, it had to beHitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference, because it just felt right!

Readers of the classic sci-fi novel may recall a pair of nuclear missiles that were transformed into a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias mid-air. With the sheer number of nukes dropped in the Fallout universe, guess two of them got tagged by Pratchett's Infinite Improbability Drive! Fun stuff, and makes for a really weird encounter if you don't know what's up.

A hatch at the bottom of the sea

video game easter eggs 2020

To say that GTA V has a number of easter eggs would be the understatement of the decade. Featuring a creepy mythos all of its own including "dead" serial killers, alien sightings, ghosts, and even the bigfoot itself, this game is a goldmine for easter egg hunters! Most of them, though, are extremely involved. We didn't think the tired topic of UFO sightings would fit in this article. Instead, we decided to pick a more contained secret to share.

As per the screenshot above, GTA V's seafloor plays host to a mysterious hatch. We don't know what's behind it. Hell, we don't even know if it's part of a scrapped storyline or a simple Easter egg. What we do know, though, is that it's one of those discoveries that have always creeped us out. Rockstar sure knows how to make 'em.

Red Dead Redemption 2's Strange Man

The grand finale of our video game Easter egg 2020 list simply had to be RDR2. Much like Rockstar's previous release, GTA V, this game offers a ridiculous number of Easter eggs to chase after. None of them, however, are quite as elusive as the Strange Man. Having already made himself known to players of the first Red Dead Redemption game, the Strange Man is an impossible entity. Bullets pass right through it, it knows things it shouldn't know, and its appearance is oddly unsettling, too.

While we don't know what the Strange Man is, RDR2 offers an intriguing encounter with the mysterious creature. If you go eastward from the Mattock Pond, you'll easily find its cabin. Be sure to search near the Kamassa River. The cabin's appropriately creepy furnishings host an oddly incomplete portrait of the creature. Now, if you manage to 100% complete the game and return to the Strange Man's cabin, you'll see that the portrait is complete! The kicker? If you look in the mirror to the left of the portrait, you'll see the Strange Man standing behind you. Turn around, and the creature goes poof. You'll never see it again in RDR2.

Honestly, with the number of strange and creepy events in Rockstar's games, we wouldn't blink twice if it turned out that they're in the same universe as Control. Altered World Events much? You never know...

In any case, we hope you find our overview of some of our favorite video game Easter eggs interesting, and that you have a happy Easter! Stay tuned for lots more gaming content in the coming days, and don't forget to stay home.
