We're getting most of our info from the awesome Vermintide 2 wiki page, of course. Since hard data is sometimes difficult to chew on, we'll be offering insights and interpretations as we go!

The Warhammer Vermintide 2 Best Class:

Markus Kruber - Mercenary, Huntsman, Foot Knight

Warhammer Vermintide 2 Classes

The obvious first choice for anyone starting to play Vermintide 2 is none other than Markus Kruber. This hard-boiled, armor-clad, and mustached soldier is a badass whose three specializations wield all sorts of heavy weaponry. Kruber's starting career is that of the Mercenary.

Mercenary Career

Warhammer Vermintide 2 best classes

The Mercenary uses his halberd for crowd control: players should chain their attacks so that they hit multiple enemies with a single swing. Doing so will incur buffs that stack with the Mercenary's passive increase in crit chance. Similarly, make sure that other players stick close to you if you're playing Mercenary. His Career Skill affords a neat health bonus to all nearby players!

A small hint, too: the Halberd is one of the best weapons in the game. Use it to hold the front line and give your allies a chance to focus on specific targets when necessary. Be sure to equip the 'And Stay Down!" passive to further boost the Mercenary's crit chance abilities.

Huntsman Career - Level 7 Unlock

Warhammer Vermintide 2 best classes

If it's Huntsman you wish to play, you're going to want to make good use of Kruber's arsenal of firearms. Instead of pretending you're a tank, the Huntsman will afford you various ranged abilities, as well as a bit of stealth. Furthermore, if your aim is true, you'll be a huge fan of the Huntsman's passive ability: regaining ammo on successful headshots.

Do keep in mind that you'll still want to have your squadmates close by. The Huntsman projects a critical chance aura that everyone will find handy when push comes to shove.

Foot Knight Career - Level 12 Unlock

If the Mercenary was a wannabe-tank with his halberd, the Foot Knight is the real deal. When Kruber jumps into his Foot Knight role, he nabs some really spectacular passive stamina and defensive bonuses. The Valiant Charge Career Skill allows a semblance of crowd control too. Nothing quite like ramming into a horde to break their front line!

Sadly, the Foot Knight is also more of a support Career due to its distinct lack of damage buffs. If you're going after this one, note that you will need to rely on your teammates for pure DPS.

Kerillian - Waystalker, Handmaiden, Shade

Warhammer Vermintide 2 Classes

A true elfling, Kerilian is a master archer and melee combatant, but it's up to you to define her true calling. Will you focus on her stealth, ranged, or melee combat abilities? Will you strike your enemies down with precision, or through the sheer volume of your attacks?

Waystalker Career

Kerilian's starting Career is that of a somewhat generic if infinitely reliable elf combatant. You can pick from a variety of daggers and bows, each of which comes with a special bonus or two that you'll need to consider. Whatever you decide on, the Waystalker will provide you with double the ammo capacity, and an ability to completely saturate the level with arrows. No matter where you go as a Waystalker, the killing field follows in your wake.

The Waystalker's passive healing ability will keep you going longer than other characters do, but you'll need to be below 50% health for it to kick in. Handy!

Handmaiden Career - Level 7 Unlock

It's all about dodging and dashing with Kerilian's Handmaiden Career. Favoring her glaive armaments, the Handmaiden not only gets increased dodge distance, but also twice the Stamina regen other characters get. Her Career Skill - simply called 'Dash' - will allow you to skewer a number of foes in front of you, as well as inflicting bleed on every successful hit.

The Handmaiden is for those who want a limber but capable melee combatant while still making good use of weapons with increased range. Spears, for example, are the Handmaiden's best friends!

Shade Career - Level 12 Unlock

As you may expect by now, Kerilian's Shade Career is all about stealth and wickedness. Positioning is crucial for a good Shade player! You'll want to be able to quickly get behind the enemies' front line because the Shade can insta-kill any man-sized enemy with her daggers. On all other foes, she will get a huge 50% damage buff when attacking them from behind.

When there's simply no way to get behind the horde, a Shade Kerilian can use her Infiltrate Career Skill to become undetectable and pass through enemies altogether. When the Shade leaves this dimensional cover by attacking, she will deal a staggering 10-22 times the damage of her Dual Daggers of choice. Nothing to be trifled with!

Bardin Goreksson - Ranger Veteran, Ironbreaker, Slayer

Warhammer Vermintide 2 Classes

Where there are elves, there are dwarves. That's how Warhammer Fantasy works. Somewhat unexpectedly, Goreksson is no less capable of a ranged fighter than any of his compatriots. Naturally, the man's got berserker-like tendencies too, but who doesn't?

Ranger Veteran Career

Increased reserve ammo and reload speed make for the brunt of the Ranger Veteran Goreksson's kit. Not only will the Ranger Veteran dish out more damage over a longer period of time than other equivalent classes, but he can also deploy smoke bombs in a pinch. A 1/10 chance not to use his renewable items helps out over the course of a full mission as well.

The Ranger Veteran Career pick will likely be appreciated by those who want an all-rounded self-sufficient shooter.

Ironbreaker Career - Level 7 Unlock

The Ironbreaker is precisely what you'd expect out of a dwarf melee fighter. Heavily armored and even more heavily armed, the Ironbreaker is a true tank's tank. You'll get bonuses to stun and damage resistance, as well as more stamina to block hits with. The real ace far as Ironbreaker's kit goes, though, is certainly his passive, which allows him to ignore any single attack every 20 seconds. The Impenetrable Career Skill, on the other hand, works as an instant enrage and defense skill for those times when you really want to pull all the heat.

Slayer Career - Level 12 Unlock

Described as 'a melee whirlwind of carnage', the Slayer Goreksson is a dream come true for those who want to embody the awesome idea of a gore tornado. Each hit on any given enemy stacks a damage buff that works extremely well with the Slayer's passive attack speed increase. On the other hand, the Leap Career Skill lets the Slayer jump in and out of combat at a moment's notice, followed by an instant stun and even further attack speed buff. Dual axes ahoy!

Sienna Fuegonasus - Battle Wizard, Unchained, Pyromancer

The resident pyromaniac, Fuegonasus is one of the most powerful characters of Vermintide 2. Where you take her incredible skillset depends entirely on you, of course. Will you opt for the relatively grounded Battle Wizard, or go ham with your insane Unchained skillset?

Battle Wizard Career

The Battle Wizard is what happens when Sienna attempts not to turn everything around her into ash. This subdued depiction of the pyromancer's addiction allows for a number of area-of-effect spells, as well as a unique passive that buffs Sienna if she doesn't burn stuff for a little while. If you're into speedy damage-over-time effects, Battle Wizard's Fire Walk Career Skill will be a lovely choice indeed.

We feel that Sienna's ranged weaponry works best with the Battle Wizard. Staves are, as it turns out, pocket flamethrowers!

Pyromancer Career - Level 7 Unlock

Whereas the Battle Wizard slowly damages a large number of enemies at the same time, the Pyromancer opts for an opposite approach. Essentially an Assassin-tier Career, Pyromancer Sienna deals a substantial amount of damage to any single target. This effect is further augmented by her passive ranged damage increase, so again, stick with fire-staves if you're playing a Pyromancer.

What's particularly interesting about the Pyromancer is her Career Skill. The Burning Head. Sienna can cast a heat-seeking (heh) projectile that explodes after seeking and tracking down foes. Useful in those cases where you can't really hit your targets well!

Unchained Career - Level 12 Unlock

After equipping her Unchained skillset, Sienna is nothing short of a force of nature. Whereas the Pyromancer and the Battle Wizard should opt for ranged weaponry, Unchained is a master of melee arms. In fact, the more damage an Unchained Sienna takes, the more of it will transfer into Overcharge (which also has no slowdown whatsoever). When Overcharge gets to a high enough level, Unchained gets a 60% damage buff!

Naturally, Unchained's Career Skill is appropriately explosive. The Living Bomb clears Sienna's Overcharge by positively demolishing all enemies that surround her. Barbecue, anyone?

Victor Saltzpyre - Zealot, Bounty Hunter, Witch Hunter Captain

The final character featured in this guide is emblematic of Vermintide: Victor Saltzpyre, witch hunter extraordinaire. Saltzypre's Career choices are as complex as they are questionable, depending on which one you end up having the most fun with. We don't judge, though!

Witch Hunter Captain Career

Fans of classic vampire hunters will greatly enjoy Saltzpyre's unique selection of weapons and skills, especially in his Witch Hunter Captain Career. Whether it's automatic firearms or, hell, a flail, Saltzpyre is a fast and vigorous combatant.

More specifically, the Witch Hunter Captain needs to always be able to rapidly move from one end of the battlefield to the other, debuffing enemies wherever needed. Headshot and critical strike damage bonuses do nothing to temper his killing power, and we suggest a healthy combo of both ranged and melee armaments for those looking to make the most out of this Career.

Bounty Hunter Career - Level 7 Unlock

Sure, the Bounty Hunter might look like he's a melee combatant, but he's really more of a riot cop. Not only does the Bounty Hunter get a guaranteed ranged crit every 10 seconds, but he also packs an increased ammo capacity with an improved reload speed. Furthermore, his Career Skill - Locked and Loaded - fires a very powerful round that goes through enemies in a straight line. This is a fun one, especially when paired with Saltzpyre's emblematic auto guns.

Zealot Career - Level 12 Unlock

Though lacking in heavy armor, the Zealot is an unrepentant melee combatant. The less health Zealot Saltzpyre's got, the more powerful he gets. Furthermore, his passive means that your heavy attacks straight-up cannot be interrupted. If that's not enough, Zealot's Heart of Iron says that Saltzpyre will not die on taking lethal damage. So get out there, right in the thick of things! Best of all, you can do so with Holy Fervour, Zealot's awesome Career Skill. It lets Saltzpyre dash forward for a 25% increase in attack speed for 5 seconds, allowing you to eviscerate the poor sod in front of you.

Conclusion

We hope our short-but-not-so-short Warhammer Vermintide 2 best classes primer helps in picking the one character that's right for you. This game has got plenty to offer, but you can't really have all that much fun if you're stuck with a hero you don't enjoy playing as.

Now get out there and murder some Skaven! You know you want to!
