It seems almost as if it was tomorrow that Konami announced that it would undergo a substantial production restructuring, one of the results of which was a lessened focus on AAA game development in lieu of mobile and mid-tier productions, like Metal Gear: Survive. Years after that, we've got Metal Gear Solid Delta in front of us, the huge revival of Silent Hill, and who knows what else in tow! Konami is back, and that's a big deal for Metal Gear Solid fans, for sure.
But what the heck is this new Metal Gear Solid game? Why is it called Metal Gear Solid Delta, of all things? What's it got to do with Konami's grand return to form? We intend to answer these questions over the next couple of sections. Stick around then, especially if you're fond of Metal Gear, because we have some excellent news.
Metal Gear Solid Delta - or Metal Gear Solid δ, if we want to be fancy about it - is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater from 2004. This is Konami's attempt to bring the legendary Metal Gear series back into the limelight with immersive stealth action gameplay that all fans will know and love. In more ways than one, it is the origin story of the franchise's central conceit, and the return of the iconic military operative Snake may well end up serving as the grand revival of the Metal Gear Solid series at long last.
That is, granted, a long-winded way of saying that Metal Gear Solid 3 is finally, at long last, about to come out on PC officially. The actual release date is pending still, mind, but it's due sometime in the near future!
Naturally, we don't really know why Konami thought now was the right time to invest in Metal Gear. We do believe, however, that the decision may have something to do with the things we mentioned in the prior section: Konami is ready to start making waves once again, and Metal Gear and Silent Hill are some of its most robust core gaming IPs.
The second big reason, though, is that the stealth gaming niche is... well, ridiculously underserved. Modern stealth games are a non-item, sadly enough, and it's entirely possible that someone at Konami correctly identified that they could easily kick hineys in this regard.
It's easy: Metal Gear Solid Delta, being a Snake Eater remake, enjoys the sort of pedigree that few other game series could achieve. To put things into perspective, virtually the entire Metal Gear series is held in high regard, but Metal Gear Solid 3, in particular, is often considered to be the pinnacle of it all.
Granted, some may feel that it was only a matter of time before Konami finally got around to remastering/remaking the original game proper. We don't necessarily disagree; we're just happy that it's finally happening.
The official Konami website of Metal Gear Solid Delta promises "the same gripping story and engrossing world, but now with cutting-edge graphics and 3D audio."
We fully expect that there will be more changes revealed as time goes on, but for the time being, it seems that Konami's goal for this project is to enhance its visuals and other assorted technical tidbits, all the while retaining all the good classic stuff. One thing worth pointing out here is that the game will reuse the original voice actors' audio. Which, to be honest, is probably a good thing!
The thing to keep in mind here is that Konami isn't just doing a one-off with Metal Gear Solid δ, as it were. Instead, there's a whole array of upcoming Metal Gear remakes/remasters coming over the next year or so! And, what's particularly notable here is that it includes even the oldest Metal Gear titles from the late '90s:
A remarkably comprehensive package, all in all, and one that's just the start of Konami's renewed Metal Gear adventure. Note, however, that Delta is not going to be featured as part of this bundle. Instead, what you're getting here is the original Metal Gear Solid 3, warts and all.
All the better, though: we expect that the comparisons between the two will be extremely interesting, and we can't wait to deliver more information about all these games as soon as possible.
The MGS: Master Collection Vol. 1. is due to launch on October 24, 2023, so it won't be too long of a wait until we get that into our grubby paws, at the very least. Stay tuned!
